Après "La nuit des paras", bande dessinée qui retrace les actions des troupes aéroportées britanniques en Normandie durant la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 1944, qui est parue en 2010 aux Editions du Triomphe, je réitère l'aventure avec un album consacré au "Commando Kieffer", ces 177 français qui ont débarqué au milieu des troupes anglaises sur Sword Beach.

After "The para's night", a comic book about the actions of the airborne forces in Normandy during the night of june 5th 1944, and published in 2010, I've written a new book centred around the "Commando Kieffer", those 177 men who landed beside the  british troops on sword beach.

L'abum retrace différentes époques de la vie de cette unité, depuis sa création jusqu'à la fin de la guerre. Il est dessiné par Marcel Uderzo.

The book tells differents periods of the life of this unit, from it's creation until the end of the war. It is drawn by Marcel Uderzo. No english version avalaible, sorry.

Il y a exactement 94 ans, la 5ème division britannique se lance à l'assaut des tranchées allemandes dans les environs de Fromelles. La bataille va durer 27 heures et coûter plus de 7500 soldats aux troupes du Commonwealth, dont 6000 rien que pour les australiens (2500 morts et 3500 blessés). Cette bataille devait être une diversion pour un assaut d'envergure plus au sud dans la Somme.
La division australienne avait débarqué à Marseille à peine 20 jours plus tôt, c'était son premier engagement sur le sol français. C'est également la première fois que l'on parle de l'Australie en tant que Nation et non pas en tant que pays rattaché au Commonwealth. Pour les Australiens, le petit village de Fromelles dans le nord, est aussi connu que Paris.
A l'issue de la bataille, la plupart des corps avaient été inhumés dans des fosses communes. C'est l'une de ces fosses qui a été retrouvée en 2008 par un chercheur australien.

Exactly 94 years ago, the 5th Infantry Division went to battle against the germans in the area of Fromelles. The battle is going to lengh 27 hours and will cost more than 7500 men to the Commonwealth troops, and 6000 just for the australians (2500 dead and 3500 wounded). This battle was supposed to be a diversion for a largest operation in the south, in the Somme.
The australian division had landed less than 20 days before at Marseille and it was is first engagement on the french ground. It is also the first time than we spoke about Australia as a Nation, and not as a member of the Commonwealth. For the australians, the village of Fromelles in the north of France is known same as Paris is.
At the end of the battle, most of the bodies were buried in groups graves. It is one of this graves that was found in 2008 by an australian archaeologist.

En janvier, les deux premiers corps des 250 retrouvés dans cette fosse ont été ré-inhumés dans le nouveau cimetière militaire construit par la commission des cimetières de guerre au coeur du village de Fromelles. Les corps de 247 autres ont été également ré-inhumés durant le mois de février.

In january, the first 2 bodies of the 250 found in the grave were reburied in the new cemetery built by the war grave commission in the heart of the village. The bodies of 247 others were also reburied during february.

Aujourd'hui, c'est le dernier de ces soldats qui a été enterré, en présence de Mme Quentin Bryce, Gouverneur Général d'Australie, du Prince Charles d'Angleterre, du Duc de Kent, du Ministre australien des anciens combattants Allan Griffin et de Hubert Falco, secrétaire d'état français aux anciens combattants. Des milliers de visiteurs émus, dont de nombreux australiens, ont également pu suivre la cérémonie sur des écrans géants.

Today, the last of this soldiers was reburied in presence of the honourable Quentin Bryce General Governor of Australie, HRH The Prince of Walles, HRH The Duke of Kent, the minister of the veterans of Australia Allan Griffin and Hubert Falco, the french secretary of state for the veterans. Thousands of very moved visistors, including many australians, also attended the ceremony on giant screens.

Pour la Commission des Tombes de Guerre du Commonwealth, c'est également une date importante puisque ce cimetière - Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery - est le premier cimetière que l'organisation construit depuis 50 ans.

For the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, it is also a important day because this cemetery - Fromelles (Pheasant Wood ) Military Cemetery - is the first built by this organisation since 50 years.

Le cercueil du dernier des 250 corps retrouvés est arrivé au cimetière dans un chariot militaire de la première guerre mondiale tiré par 4 chevaux après une procession à travers le village depuis le bois du faisant, lieu de la bataille les 19 et 20 juillet 1916.

The coffin of the last of the 250 recovered bodies arrived at the cemetery on a first world war military wagon pulled by four horses after a procession through the village from pheasant wood, the place where the battle took place on 19 and 20 july 1916.

Près de 6000 personnes assistaient à cette cérémonie d'inauguration et d'inhumation.

Almost 6000 people attended this ceremony of dedication and burial.

Après le documentaire "Tombés du Ciel" que vous avez certainement eu l'occasion de voir ces dernières années, j'ai eu la chance d'écrire pour les éditions du Triomphe, un éditeur spécialisé dans la bande dessinée historique, un album retraçant la nuit des aéroportés de la 6ème division aéroportée durant la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 1944. "La nuit des paras" est son titre.

After the documentary "Out of the Blue" that some of you have certainly seen during this last years, I had the opportunity to write for Editions du Triomphe, a french publisher specialized in historical comic books, a book telling the night of the airborne forces of the 6th airborne division during the night of the 5th to 6th of june 1944. "The paras' night" is the title.

Le dessin est de l'artiste argentin Gerardo Balsa. Cet album est l'aboutissement d'un an de travail et nous avons travaillé dur pour qu'il soit prêt pour ces commémorations du 66ème anniversaire. Une version anglaise est disponible en plus de la version française.

Art is from argentinian artist Gerardo Balsa. This book is the result of a year of work, and we have worked hard to be ready for the 66th aniversary celebrations. An english version is also available.

Pour ceux qui auraient l'occasion de passer dans le Nord, je ne peux que conseiller la visite de ce gigantesque complexe prévu à l'origine pour assembler et lancer des fusées V1 et V2 sur l'Angleterre et sur Londres, dont la construction fut ordonnée par Hitler en 1942.

For those who would have the opportunity to come in the North (while coming for the Eurostar shuttle ^^), I would like to advise you to visit this huge military complex planned to be a V1 and V2 launch base. His construction was ordered by Hitler in 1942.

Suite à un bombardement massif en juillet 1943, le site est transformé en usine de fabrication d'oxygène liquide, l'envoi des V2 se faisant depuis la proche coupole d'Helfaut. C'est pendant ce bombardement que René Mouchotte (fameux pilote des Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres) est abattu.

Following a massive bombing in july 1943, the site is tranformed as a liquid oxygen factory, the launch of the rocket made from the close base at Helfaut. It is during is bombing that René Mouchotte (famous pilot from the Free French Air Forces) is shot down.

Nous venons d'apprendre le décès du Major John Shave - MC, du 3rd Parachute Squadron des Royal Engineers survenu le 8 octobre.

C'est lui et son équipe qui ont fait sauter le pont de chemin de fer sur la Dives à Bures sur Dives le 6 juin 1944 au matin, puis sur ordres du Lt-Colonel Alastair Pearson, Cdt le 8th Parachute Battalion, a été jusqu''à Troarn pour vérifier que le pont avait bien été détruit. Constatant qu'une seule arche de celui-ci était détruite, il fit sauter les deux autres. Durant ce temps le Lt Colin Brown du 8th Para Bn et sa section étaient en protection près de l'église de Troarn.

We just learn that Major John Shave -MC, from the 3rd Para Squadron Royal Engineers passed away on october 8th.
Him and his platoon blowed up the railway bridge over the Dives river at Bures sur Dives in the morning of june 6th, 1944, then ordered by Lt-Colonel Alastair Pearson, C.O. of the 8th Bn, went to Troarn to verify if the bridge was destroyed. Seeing that only one arch was destroyed, he blowed up the last two. During this time Lt Colin Brown from 8th para and his platoon covered them from the church of Troarn.

Dans moins de 3 semaines les cérémonies du souvenir pour le 65ème anniversaire du Débarquement de Normandie auront commencé.
Elles débuteront le 5 juin au matin et se termineront le 8 juin. Pour beaucoup de vétérans ce sera certainement le dernier voyage sur les lieux qui ont marqué leurs vies à jamais. C'est donc l'occasion ou jamais de venir les rencontrer pour les remercier une nouvelle fois du sacrifice que leurs compagnons et eux-mêmes ont fait en 1944.

In less than 3 week, the comemorations for the 65th aniversary of D-Day will have started already.
They will begin ont june 5th and will close on june 8th. For many veterans it will certainly be their last journey to the landscapes that marked their lifes forever. It is a great opportunity to come and met them for a last thanks for the sacrifice them and their comrades made in 1944.

Pour ce 65ème anniversaire c'est un programme presque aussi important que celui du 60ème qui a été préparé.
